Job Outline – Graduate Optical Designer:   

We are seeking a high-calibre candidate who is highly motivated, creative, and versatile. The optical designer will be responsible for the design of complex optical systems, from initial concepts through to prototype manufacture and support during volume production. 

 

Key Responsibilities:   

The main duties with this position will include:   

  • Involvement in all stages of the design process:  

  • Defining target specifications with the customer  

  • Development of concepts, detailed design and analysis  

  • Generating optical design data for manufacture  

  • Providing technical support to the manufacturing, assembly and test processes  

  • Use of optical design and analysis software tools (eg. CodeV, Zemax OpticStudio, FRED)  

  • Producing design study reports and contributing technical inputs to proposals  

  • Global representation of the company at customers, suppliers, and conferences  

 

Personal Specification:  

It is essential that all candidates have the following:  

  • An education to at least degree level, preferably in Physics /Optical Engineering  

  • Strong attention to detail and good interpersonal skills  

  • A passion for optics, science, and engineering, with strong motivation to excel in these fields  

  • Creative flair to develop original and innovative optical solutions  

  • Fundamental coding skills to develop customised design and analysis scripts 

  • The ability to liaise with customers and suppliers on product specifications / performance matters  

 

The ideal candidate will have: 

  • A detailed knowledge of optical imaging systems, particularly opto-electronic systems in defence and aerospace applications.  

  • Familiarity with optical design software (such as CodeV, Zemax OpticStudio or similar)  

  • A minimum of three years of experience in the design and analysis of optical systems, with the ability to lead all aspects of optical design activity within a multidisciplinary project team.  

  • The ability to provide training and instruction, where appropriate, to other optical designers
