Our facility in Mississauga, Ontario has key positions in Sales, Marketing, Research & Development, Engineering, Manufacturing, Customer Support and other disciplines. Operating since 1984, this site specializes in the design, development, manufacturing and marketing of a broad portfolio of innovative LED and Lamp technology. The Toronto facility serves a variety of markets such as electronics, optoelectronics, digital printing, general assembly, coatings, and medical device manufacturing, as well as endoscopy, bioscience research, microscopy and instrumentation.
We are presently seeking an Optical Engineer II that will be responsible for designing high performance biomedical and industrial optical illumination systems from concept through to commercial release. The incumbent will apply both theoretical and practical knowledge of optical systems, lasers, LEDs, and thermal management to evaluate the feasibility of advanced concepts, design prototype systems and bring new technology to market. The role demands a motivated & creative individual with a passion for innovation, confidence to take on challenging problems and agility to recover quickly and change course.
Main responsibilities:
- Plan, develop and refine optical and thermal design concepts for next generation solid state illumination systems through experimentation, theory and modeling.
- Investigate latest optical and thermal technologies to increase competitive advantage of our products. Communicate product improvement recommendations through reports and presentations.
- Work with internal project team & external partners to determine technical requirements, feasibility and assist in preparing statement of work or technical proposals. Act as technical liaison between customers and suppliers on all matters related to the optical system design and development process.
- Apply engineering principles, simulation tools such as Icepak & Lighttools, design tolerances, analytical skills, empirical & statistical methods to ensure optical, thermal and system level performance is met across the range of operating conditions.
- Systems will typically include LEDs/Lamps/Lasers emitting in deep UV- IR, optical components, thermal management and electronics controls. Prototype design will also include reliability & system stability considerations as well as commercial aspects related to functionality, safety and BOM cost.
- Develop analytical test methods, assembly processes and build measurement equipment to test critical optical/system parameters during the product development or production life cycle.
- Prepare & review engineering reports such as system design documents, test protocol & reports, technical notes, drawings, specifications, etc. Keep accurate records and drawings of development activities in PLM.
- Support project manager in developing project plans, maintaining and tracking progress of tasks/deliverables/cost, recording and maintaining technical documentation.
- Lead, contribute to, and participate in design reviews to assess the ability of proposed designs to meet specified requirements, including tolerances, failure mode analysis, risk assessment and manufacturability. Follow up on the feedback and implement any recommendations provided by senior engineers and project leaders through project initiation and at key design milestones.

Requirements:
- 2+ years’ industry experience in the design, modeling, prototyping and test of optical systems.
- Minimum: B.Sc. or B.A.Sc. in Physics, Optical Engineering or related discipline.
- M.A.Sc. or M.Sc. in Optical Physics or Optical Engineering (from recognized educational institutions) is desired
- Background in optical components & system design, solid-state light sources, optical metrology equipment and testing optical/thermal systems.
- Familiarity with optical, mechanical, thermal modeling software (LightTools, Zemax, Solidworks, ANSYS Icepak or equivalent) is desired.
- Skilled in a programming language (e.g., MATLAB, Python, etc.) for test automation and data analysis
- Motivated individual with innovative mindset and a resourceful problem solving skills.
- Excellent leadership skills and ability to efficiently evaluate, prioritize and handle multiple and changing projects and priorities.
- Team player with ability to work in a faced-paced and multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interpret and summarize scientific results in a clear, concise, accurate manner.
- Experience working in an ISO9001, 14001, 13485 certified, and/or FDA QSR compliant environment is an asset
